A versus would require at the least the ability to construct siege weapons for offensive use.
Balance-wise, a rock-paper-scissors type thing could be used to prevent any one strategy or unit from being too OP when doing a versus. i.e. arrows (especially fired from walls) >> melee. Melee >> Rams and Siege Towers. Covered siege weapons like this >> arrows/ranged. At least that way, even if there is some relatively OP unit in terms of stats for cost or something, it will at least get partly counterbalanced by the rock-paper-scissors effect.
Of course, we need to add a metaphorical "lizard" and "spock" too if we are talking warefare of this age. Calvary tends to be effective against infantry, especially if lined up properly and able to charge. And if magic is involved in combat (it already is a thing in this setting due to unit revival at the churches and the magic fire-archer things you can summon for short periods of time), then there is that as well.
Well, if we do get versus at some point, I imagine we would first get a mode where we attack an enemy castle or something in singleplayer, so that can serve as a good basic testing ground for balancing unit types.
I love the idea, I'm just worried with how long you might have to sit and do nothing in the night/day time... maybe have both players attack at night where you choose which attack and which defend. That way the day can still be long and nights be of same length... (and you'll have to consider defending xD
