Beat Campaign without ever playing main quest

So, an interesting thing happened while gf and I were playing today. We'd decided to follow the side quests before the main quest, and so have been playing a couple maps a day for the last couple of weeks to see where it goes. Today after killing a dragon we were informed we'd completed the main campaign.

The very first main quest node is still there on the map, and the only other node that referenced the main quest is still on the map at a location we haven't been to yet. Is this intended? Did we break it? Curious if others have run into this.

It's a known issue because of allowing players to wander about instead of making them go a straight line
You'll have to beat all the main story nodes to properly unlock campaign-related things like potions and enchants if I remember correctly, but the endless mode for sure
