All crafting materials can be purchased from the town vendors now.
If it is gated, it would unlocked as Towns are opened by progressing through the Main Quests - which Iron would be no later than the second town. Upgrading your equipment really isn't worth it until close to level 30 anyways, so even being unlocked later, wouldn't be an issue.
Sure I know that but the game tool tips also state they are available in the Mines as well so they should be farmable. I don't want to spend cash on something I am supposed to be able to farm. I spent another 2 hours running about 15 Mines quest nodes and just got copper and gold as before, still no iron. Either fix it or take it out of the tool tip that you can get it while questing.
While true it's stupid that the iron ore says to visit the mines locations for drops, if it's not going to be mineable then change the tooltip text. I don't think Iron Ore should only be purchasable either. If I wanna do runs and grind/farm some from drops instead of buying it you should be able to. That's the purpose of even having the gather locations listed on the tooltips after all.
