Windmill only for new farms?
Or does it only register the existing fields the next day?

My windmill attached itself to old fields(one's already built)

That windmill looks to be too far from the fields in the screenshot. Equip your hoe and you will see the windmill radius.
Need to keep fields really close to the dumb circle......and if you are doing large fields, then even closer.....its a pain and I noticed that regardless if you have plenty of water from it, some of your fields stay BONE DRY

A really good strategy is to place the windmill first. You can place fields after it has been fully built and, with your hoe equipped, you can keep track of each field to see that it will get water. I've noticed in my game that 3x3 and especially 4x4 fields require an exponentially larger amount of water per day than 2x2 fields. A full windmill accessing over 1k water per day can't keep up with 9 4x4 fields. I'm hoping they will address this at some point but the list of stuff to do is long so it may take a while. I never have a problem with a 1k windmill servicing 40 2x2 fields so I'd suggest limiting your fields to those for the time being.

Thank y'all. I didn't know that hoe trick. When i placed it, the lot was green and I thought whoa, that's quite the radius.

Yeah, the "green" area was the radius of the barn for purposes of worker range.
