Can't Get Boar Skin/Pelt

I killed a boar, and collected 3 meat from it, but no skin. I'm holding a knife, while looking at my kill, and there isn't an interaction for skinning it either. Help?

I bought the Settler's Guide to go with the game, and you're supposed to get 1 boar skin and 4(FOUR, not three) boar meat from a boar. For a deer, 3 deer meat and one skin.

As far as I can tell, it is random to a certain degree what you get from looting animals.

That doesn't make any sense, though. If it's randomized at all, then in the settler's guide it should say something to the effect of 3-4 meat and 0-1 skin, for example.

To the original poster, I found there is a perk you can invest your skill points into that allows you to collect pelts, hides, etc. Once I unlocked it, I got one meat and one pelt with every kill.
