That is what I remember.
Pieces cannot be jumped like in checkers, so all you have to do is move all 4 pieces in turn so that there is never a path to the left side and then repeat until you catch the black piece on the right side. Make sure you never advance a piece two columns ahead of any other.
Perhaps they made it easier on the final version of the game? I'm not sure since I stopped playing right after the bear chase in the demo.
