If they don't advance the story or help us get new dialogue with teammates I guess I should just do all available N7 missions for money and resources before moving onto a side quest or main mission, thanks
do 2 N7 missions and go talk with all crew on ship, rinse and repeat
but do arrival dlc after beating the game right? i heard thats the best time to do it
I've done it right before the IFF, after the IFF, and after beating the game. Doesn't really matter. But, you only have so many missions you can do after the IFF. If you don't have any missions to do, except maybe the Legion mission, then you should be good. There are guides to tell you how many missions you can do after IFF. 4 at the most, if I recall correctly.
Last time I played, I did Legion Loyalty, Tali loyalty, and then Overlord, right after the IFF. I've done Overlord before Tali's loyalty, also. Can't remember if that causes unique dialogue.
It's good to do Tali's loyalty at least one time after the IFF mission, so you can take Legion with you. Unique dialogue if you do, plus he helps with defeating Geth. Do his loyalty first, then Tali's.
Once you get to the point where you need to get the IFF, make sure to do ALL missions you want to do (Loyalty, exploration for XP etc) BEFORE going there.
Reason is that you trigger an invisible timer after this, which has really bad consequences if you mess around.
So for the most "optimum" play:
Do all missions, loyalty, etc until map is clear - hold on "Arrival". do IFF, do missions after that in sequence. Once "THAT" mission happens and you get told you need to go ASAP, do the final right away. Finally, for immersion, complete Arrival.

It's just a nice change of pace really and you won't lose anything worthwhile if you skip them, however after the "aquire reaper IFF" moment, you're stuck with an emergency mission, if you decide that the N7 missions are cool, you'll pay the price, it's an emergency mission for a reason.
Do whatever you can before the reaper IFF
just to be 100% clear about this, N7 missions in ME2 won't advance any dialogue with teammates like the main+loyalty quests does?
True
If I'm not mistaken, there are triggers for each conversation. I believe there's 3 dialogues with each squadmate, assuming no romance. Romance opens more dialogue. There's also dialogue for upgrade of the ship, or personal weapons. I think Grunt and Legion grant weapons, not ship upgrades.
Ok, so they know you will recruit squadmates in various sequences. So, if you recruit, for instance, Garrus, very early, it will take more time to do all his dialogue, because you haven't satisfied the dialogue triggers, such as Horizon. However, if you recruit somebody much later, after the dialogue triggers have been satisfied, you can literally have a conversation, leave, then come right back and have the next conversation, because when you initiate that conversation, the system sees that dialogue #1 has taken place, so on to dialogue sequence #2, and it then sees that the trigger has been satisfied for that conversation. I believe this is done to make sure that squadmates recruited later, don't run out of time to do the conversations.
