How do you get a ps4 controller to work with the first mass effect?
I dunno about ps4 controllers, I bought an xbox 360 controller from Walmart several years ago. Plug it into a USB port and it's good to go, if the ps4 controller doesn't have a USB cable there are adaptors you can get.
More on topic, I've got... something like 180 hours on ME1, 300 hours on ME 2, and about 20-30 hours on MELE (got it on sale for ME3 to complete my trilogy). I've spent my time on 1+2 with mouse and keyboard, I've been using my 360 controller for MELE. They're both serviceable, in the end it's more up to your personal preference. For me the controller is definitely more comfortable, but I land more accurate shots with mouse+KB, your mileage may vary.
I've never used a PS controller but I have read that they don't play well with Bioware games, possibly owing to the fact that many Bioware games started life as Xbox exclusives. In fact it's possible to activate the controller support in the PC versions of original trilogy ME1 and ME2 since the code is still there, and there's mods to do that which I used before MELE came out with organic controller support.
But I've read that it's possible to convince MELE you're using an Xbox controller by a judicious application of Steam settings. That's about all I know about it but if you search the forum for PS controller threads they should help you out.
Personally these days I use a controller, which is fine out of the box, but that's mostly because I don't have a decent mouse.
