Does this play nicely on the Steam Deck?
I'm interested in getting this but only if it runs on the deck.

EDIT:
To anyone else wondering the answer is YES.
It works on steam deck right out of the box, no fiddling around needed and it runs incredibly well.

My biggest concern is that because it's from EA the launcher will make this challenging. I really don't want to be installing third party stuff to get it to work hence why i'm looking to buy the Steam version.

Ideally it's just a case of downloading and pressing play. At the very least logging in to EA's stupid launcher.

Or is this one of those games that is totally borked because of a third party launcher,

What happens if you install the game on your PC and launch from there first?
Oh I can’t. My PC laptop blows
I can’t get legendary edition to run. I have connected my EA account to my Steam Account but I cannot successfully launch Mass Effect Legendary from Steam Deck OLED. I installed EA via Deck’s desktop mode. But I get this message when I start Mass Effect Legendary from gaming mode “ you don’t have access. This title may have been downloaded to your device by another user who owns the game. Log into a different account or restart the app to try again.”

Does it work without Origin or is there some kind of login necessary upfront?

It's EA now not Origin.
And yes it needs the EA app but it's pretty seamless.

I downloaded the game
Launched it in game mode.
It installed some stuff.
EA launcher opened and closed a few times.
The game loaded and I started playing.

Weirdly it never asked for EA logon details. I'm on a compete factory reset deck as well. Not sure if steam stores that data somewhere?

TLDR to your question. Yes. But it's seamless.
This is great to hear! Just the other day I wanted to play Max Payne 3 and it was a pain in the ass to install the Rockstar Launcher and then it wanted my login credentials which I didn't know anymore and don't see the point in it because I own the game on Steam. Luckily there was a guide on how to remove the need for the launcher.

Long story short: I hate it when publishers pull stunts like these and for once EA seems to madenit at least a minimum hassle.
Do you have any other EA game in your library ? Try to launch another EA game with EA play first, maybe ?

I know I have to launch the game from desktop mode each time there is an update, because the setting of the EA launcher does not work well in gaming mode (♥♥♥♥ EA, seriously). The first launch I do in desktop mode, and then I can launch the game from gaming mode.

At this point you could also just pirate the game. I mean EA is literaly punishing you for buying their game through their horrible DRM. You've already lost precious hours of your life because they are trash. Their service is as comfortable as a bear trap, and anti-consumer as hell. EA punishes the buyers. ♥♥♥♥'em.

I don’t know how or what I did. I did try to install and start through desktop mode and all, restarted the system… and then it started running. Thank you all

That is great to hear. Happy its finally working!
Steam is the third party launcher.
Well, now it doesn't. EA launcher just freezes in any case.
This thread was quite old before the recent post, so we're locking it to prevent confusion.
