Backup weapon is Blood Pack Punisher, almost zero weight with Ultralight, relatively high power - on par with M-7 Lancer, reasonable middle range accuracy. I don't use it for its armour piercing rounds.
Tried carrying three weapons, but not very useful in ME3. They don't rush you en-mass like ME1 or ME2. Brutes turns around when I cloak, Banshees never cover their heads, Phantom don't even have armour. Weapon swap is too slow when you need it, relative to shooting.
I think ME3 got the most diverse weapons of the three, and with free loadout it supports a wide range of styles. Which is good.
No argument with any of that. I used it in my last playthrough as a Adept.
The Prothean beam rifle--I forget what it's called--is pretty good too, for many of the same reasons. Though it's much heavier. But if you can get it up to level 10 and use the ultralight materials it doesn't impinge too strongly on your power bonus, maybe 175-185 instead of 200.
Another good one though it's a latecomer--you get it as part of the monastery side mission--is the Asari shotgun. That thing is lightweight even without the ultralight materials--again, you have to get it to level 10--and packs quite a kick. Used it in another playthrough as a Vanguard.
Another weapon I think is underrated, though not as useful as the above, is the Indra full-auto sniper rifle. Big clip, lots of spares, with a decent ammo power you can take down one of those big Cerberus mechs with no trouble.
It's waaay heavy though. I have used it and find it less than satisfactory, especially since it's hard to pick off targets at range.
If you're going to accept that much of a weight penalty, consider the Geth shotgun instead. That thing can one-shot almost anything if you pump it up! :-)
I quite enjoy the particle rifle you get the fire or electric bullet and you either stunlock or melt enemies get a magazine extension for it and you can shoot for days
Mattock was amazing in game 2 and it's good on normal mode in game 3, but really falls off on Insanity difficulty. Even the fully-automatic version lacks the oomph from much faster firing weapons. The faster the rate of fire the more damage can be done with ammunition powers like incendiary for example, which obliterates enemies.
Edit: And yes I got the irony.
