However if this is your first playthrough the Disciple doesn't become available until very late in the game. In the early game consider the N7 Piranha which is an autofire shotgun.
Another intriguing possibility is the Reegar Carbine, though the downside to that is you really have to "up close and personal" with your target since it has no effect at range. But for a Vanguard this is less of an issue.
I've even gone into combat with the M300 Claymore! Great weapon, but heavy as sin and also single-shot so VERY slow to reload. Kinda the Widow of shotguns! :-)
Just my opinions, I make no claim these are the only options. I am sure you can do fine with any of the shotguns if you use it effectively.
In ME3, I'd say the N7 Piranha. Oh, man.. it's a fully-automatic monster! Especially with Incendiary Ammo (Rank 6) Explosive Burst. Melts everything on Insanity. And it's surprisingly light (can achieve the full 200% Power Recharge Speed with it equipped)
Soldier and Vanguard are my favourite classes. Maybe Sentinel, too. I love tanky / aggressive playstyles... Tip: Just remember, pretty much any gun is viable from start to finish. Some do more damage than others, sure. But take into consideration clip size, rate of fire, etc..
That said, of all the shotguns out there my favorite in ME2 so far is the m-27 scimitar as well, because it fits my playstyle and you can stagger a lot of enemies with it.
i'm aware but someone mentioned the revenant and i responded to it's effective limitation. i mean such a weapon is a show piece rather than something practical, in me2 if i were a soldier my first choice is the Vindicator, highly accurate burst fire, no mess or fuss, it does the job with a triple tap to the head and an upgrade Avenger in ME3 is pretty good.
My ultimate point is that the claymore is more useful than the revenant if it came right to it regardless. The claymore is the best shotgun you can get for a vanguard in ME2 and then i shifted across to the crusader as another effective example comparing like i did from the revenant to the claymore.
Per-shot, the Avenger's damage is not that great.. but I find satisfaction in unloading entire clips of full-auto fire into my enemy's face. It actually does some pretty good damage near end-game with all assault rifle research upgrades (+70% AR damage, armor penetration, shield penetration, accuracy boost, etc..) + Adrenaline Rush damage boost and Incendiary / Disruptor Ammo.
My current trilogy playthrough is a 100% completion, perma-death playthrough on Insanity, where, if I die, I must restart the game I am currently on. I am now on ME3, so it's worked well so far, even if I've been handicapping myself with less than viable weapons for role-play reasons..
Once I get the N7-Typhoon and full Hahne-Kedar armor set (max weapon damage bonus) , it's game over for the Reapers. With clip size mods, it can hold almost 200 rounds.. when they run out, pop Adrenaline Rush for that insta-reload and fire another 200 rounds without stopping. I used to have so much fun in the Armax Arsenal Arena (Citadel DLC) .. I think my record was under 30 seconds in a match with Garrus and Zaeed, equipped with the same loadout as me. Brutes, Banshees, Ravagers, etc.. all dead in under 3 seconds.. and the Explosive Burst from the Incendiary Ammo would kill all nearby enemies caught in the blast zone. Absolutely ridiculous. Same with N7-Piranha shotgun, just a constant BAM BAM BAM, no need to reload due to Adrenaline Rush. I just couldn't believe how much damage I was dealing, and all I had to do was aim and hold down the trigger. I regret not recording a video of it.
