The Bringin down the sky-dlc (x57) is a proof what they could have done in the other side-missions, if given some more time & experience.
ME2 is not without it flaws though.
Completely agreed on every point. The only people that "love" Mass Effect 1 are people that have nostalgia from playing it 14 years ago. The only thing's that actually hold up decently well are the world-building and story. The oft-mentioned "RPG mechanics" are among the shallowest and most poorly implemented I've ever seen in a mainstream AAA game.
Im confused by this post because Ive never seen someone defend the minigames before and then say ME3 is a boring game. The story is arguably the best. It feels like you brought the entire galaxy together to fight a galaxy killer. Thats honestly amazing story telling right there by itself. The set pieces were good, the characters were good, I loved the gunplay more than 2. Although I like RPGs were I can become an absolute monster with any build. ME2 just doesnt do that for me
I'd honestly disagree and say ME3 is the best ME game. Hell, with the updated ending dlc, the ending isnt even that bad anymore so overall its a great story that I cant wait to continue come the next ME game
ME1 has better gameplay than ME2?!?! and you suggest its a slog compared to ME1......?

ME2 has much, much, much better combat, plus the addition of armor and barriers actually make builds more interesting as you have clear strengths and weaknesses, plus the classes are more unique. The shooting in ME1 is awful, its not fun.
The minigames, whilst not great, are still better than the hacking mini game in ME1, which is everywhere and it stupid places, you play it to open doors, you play it on Prothean ruins, you play it on a flipping mummified Salarian to get a useless League Of One Medallion....
There is no Mako now, thank god, so no more driving around barren worlds for hours.
The side quests actually use unique locations and are fully voiced instead of the same copy paste locations and generic encounters....
You suggest part of it is because you don't feel OP enough in ME2? Well good.
In ME1 another reason the combat is boring is because its just too easy and slow.
By the time I got near the end of ME1 I was so bored trying to be a sniper (as fits my class) as its slow, squaddies get in the way and enemies have alot of health, that I switched to a shotgun with high explosive rounds and just started running up to everyone and blasting since trying to get them out of cover to snipe was boring.
ME2 its super fun to be a sniper.
I can't understand your opinion, it goes against everything I experience with these games.
I could only play ME1 in small chunks cause of how much of a slog it was, yet I am finding myself wanting to play ME2 again and again.
The only serious negative I think is really valid for ME2 is mineral scanning, which is awful.
I use a mod to fix that so a single probe mines out an entire planet.

ME2 and ME3 are on the same tier of "still holds up great in 2021", but ME1, even with the improvements of the LE, is a tedious slog that clearly isn't on the same level in terms of gameplay, in any way whatsoever. As heavily as they rely on cover-based shooting, it's still an improvement over how utterly mindless and simplistic the combat was in ME1. I genuinely can't comprehend how someone can say the combat in ME2 is worse than ME1. It just makes no sense.
Considering your shields in me2 take two shots, are gone and then all it takes is a shotgun blast from 30 feet away and youre dead even on easier difficulties, even at the end of the game? Progression is way too tied to abilities and not the gun/armor play. They stripped RPG elements from ME1, took away weapon customization, took away armor mods. So yeah, Id say overall the combat is slightly worse than ME1 or 3. ME2 also has way more obnoxious minigames. Id rather do leapfrogger a hundred times than the damn find the same few patters a hundred times. And how is it good to not be able to be OP in a game near the end of the run? No build is really decent. And it sounds like you arent placing your squadmates in better positions to hold and are instead running back and forth with them. Enemies barely have health with all of your X gear at the end of the game, and I dont see how sniping isnt fun in ME1, theyre basically the same in MELE. Wait, you think sniping is too slow? Good. See? Not very nice, is it? Im not sure where your issue with ME1 is for combat, and with a shotgun fully maxed with X explosive round, its anything but slow.
My main issue with ME2 anyway is having to hack everything and it taking 4-5 seconds (if youre lucky) every single time, basically guaranteed. I've played ME2 about 5-6 times, Im tired of white, orange, purple and blue lines and finding the same image. At this point I just run past everything thats hackable because of how boring it is. Atleast with ME1 minigames, I can do it in less than a second sometimes just jamming on my keys.
You say its better than ME1 but I dont see how? Its a massive time waste and they are also everywhere. Have you checked the safes on every wall? :P
Dont get me wrong, when I say I wanna feel OP, Im not saying ME2 is hard in the first place. Its just dumb how weak your shields are, even fully upgraded or how enemies are way more tankey than in ME1
I mean its been a really long time since I played ME on anything other than Insanity so its hard for me to comment on lower difficulties.
But on ME1 I rarely died, I did zero strategy and just brought whichever squaddies I liked and ignored their powers.
I tried using cover, it was boring, because the enemies just camp back and you can't hit them. So I just don't both with cover and I don't need to because I'm tanky as hell, as long as a Krogan doesn't headbutt me I can spam shields, immunity and medi gel.
Oh, and I'm not saying a shotgun with explosive rounds in ME1 is slow.
I'm saying I gave up on my RP build because it otherwise was so boring.
The fact I felt that and its so easy to do that shows that the RPG elements are weak and shallow.
Being more flimsy in ME2 is a great choice, for one it makes you actually need to use cover, it makes gunfights more interesting. You can't just stand in the corridor and blast away. You need to evaluate the battlefield, choose appropriate powers and guns. Being an OP tank at the end of a game is NOT a good thing, it makes combat in a game boring, at least a game like this.
ME1 reminds me of the Skyrim difficulty curve on the harder settings. Early on you are at risk, and can die and enemies can be abit of a challenge. But you get OP gear and you get OP health and it turns into 'I'll stand here for 5 minutes chipping away at Draugr cause they have so much health, but they can't really hurt me........' Its not fun.
The game should always retain a challenge. ME2 does that well, the collector stuff is hard as it should be. Thematically it wouldn't fit otherwise.
As for ME2 dumbing down RPG stuff. I hear this all the time and I personally feel its from people who have a very different definition of RPG to me. To clarify, RPG to me is that I am role playing a character in a world, where I can really get an understand their personality and actions and shape them based on what I want them to do.
Its not about shoot and loot or mindless quests.
Having 20 options of what my companions can wear is nice in an RPG. But it doesn't make it an RPG for me.
I can play a racing game and have a dozen different skins for me cars, I could have a bunch of different upgrades for the engine, that doesn't make it an RPG.
GTA is however an RPG, because of the character and story stuff.
Minecraft has all the customization stuff, the weapon and armor progression, enchanting, but again I don't consider that an RPG.
There is a venn diagram of these stuff and I feel alot of people throw in 'weapon customisation' and 'armor customisation' as RPG elements when, frankly, in my opinion, they are not important.
The world is better explained and explored in ME2, we have better hub worlds so its not just the Citadel (Noveria barely counts and Feros is not a hub world, its a corridor shooter with two groups of people who say nothing).
We learn way more about the politics and way of life by seeing things like Omega and Aria as a crimelord, we see Ilium and not only how adaptive the Asari are, but how different the rules can be depending on where you go. We get amazing insight into the Quarians and Tali absolutely shines when she was bland in ME1.
We get an Elcor smoking a cigar!!!!
We see Volus in a variety of roles, learning again their culture is not so one dimensional as merchants like in ME1.
The side quests are varied and actually interesting.
Loyalty quests are, on a whole, super interesting and varied, some don't even have combat in them, many have unique mechanics only found in that quest.
I'd take all of this over having to choose between Phoenix armor VII and Colossus armor VI, especially since the armor stuff is so shallow in ME1, its just 3 basic stats. You pick the highest.....
Weapons are worse since accuracy is now irrelevant, you just pick the one with the higher damage and lower cooldown......
This is not RPG. This is stats simulator, pick the highest number.....
I RPG'd it in ME1 and just kept on my Onxy armor so I had the N7 stuff on it.
At least the weapons in ME2, limited as they are, all function differently.
Now I personally don't have the same deep hate of the hacking mini games in ME2 that you do, I hate the one in ME1 more.
But I do concede they aren't great, that being said, again there is a simple mod to fix that!!!!!
It removes the hacking games and makes scanning fast.
I know of no mods to fix ME1 because it would be so hard to fix it, here's what it would need to do.
1. Basically scrap the Mako being needed on uncharted planets, perhaps by putting a bunch of fast travel points on every map like on the Citadel, it would still be a chore to explore all these planets, but less of one.
2. Fix the combat......? Dunno how since the classes are not unique enough to make any of them interesting to play vs the others.
3. Fix the inventory management so its not tedious (Less drops, less choices on squaddies so they only use certain guns and allow you to equip the squad anywhere on the Normandy).
4. Fix the hacking mini game, no more hacking Salarian Mummies.
5. Cut out the bad side quests such as League of One Medallions or the empty bunkers that have no meaningful quest at the end..... Also ones like finding a derelict ship which just has an insane woman protecting her braindead son. Its so boring and shallow and impacts nothing. Sadly this will cut out about 70-80% of the game.
6. Make the Normandy interesting, walking around talking to your companions is not only slow, they rarely have interesting things to say.
7.Keep track of things on the galaxy map, its so annoying needing to have to manually note down the systems you have explored, especially since new systems pop up after doing story ones. There is no fun RPG element to making me do this, either the game keeps track or I do, if I need to refer to an offline list that I need to alt tab out to it just slows the game down and increases tedium, it doesn't make it fun. Cut out the middle man and have the game register that I've been there.
Its bad when RPG's hold your hand too much (like Skyrim where the magic quest marker always knows exactly where to go), but there is a balance between that and telling you nothing. Witcher 3 has a decent balance where it often shows you a general area and you must work out the rest.

The inventory system in the first game was as wide as an ocean, it's true. But once you spend more than an hour using it you realise it's as shallow as a puddle; a monotonous slog as you search for minuscule improvements, or buy larger improvements with the money that otherwise has zero purpose in the game.
Don't even get me started on the hacking. They are each fun enough in their own way the first five times you do them, but they quickly become make work tasks designed to slow you down or provide a tiny sliver of challenge to unlock your next mystery box of loot or credits depending on the game.
