Legion in the Paragon ending for the Priority: Rannoch proves this is somewhat true. Legion refers himself as "I" instead of "We" showing that he developed his own consciousness and "soul." Not sure if that 100% tells us he has an actual soul, but its a far cry from when the Geth first were made.

Well I guess we could do what already happens in the game; wax philosophical and get nowhere in the end because there is no right or wrong answer. It's all too subjective and vague and open to interpretation.

If you think they do, they do to you.

That is a good question, actually. Some people think only humans have souls due to the relationship to sin. Other people think you would have to be alive (heartbeat, blood, meaty organic bits, etc) to have a soul.

On the other hand, some people think a soul is something you have if you express sentience or reason. What is a soul, other than the very essence of your being?

Depends on what you view a soul as, far as I am concerned they do not. Not having a soul doesn't devalue their lives nor provide an excuse for their destruction, they are still sentient creatures.

To my understanding it implies he was able to develop further than other Geth, which leads me to believe that other Geth can reach this stage too.. they aren't normal machines or VI. Legion got to this stage after making him loyal in ME2 and helping him across both the second and third game, the more you talk the more you realize the Geth aren't just regular old machines.

The idea of a soul in the first place is magical thinking.
The better question is are the sentiment?
All indications in game are yes. Everything points to them being as self-aware and sentient as organics.

The idea that can't be sentient simply because they are synthetic is as backwards as the idea humans are magically different from other animals and we have magic immortal souls that go live with sky-daddy after we die.
It's not based on facts or science, but religious nonsense.
Organics are just electrochemical machines, meat computers.
Tali says the answer to their question is "Yes".... so the Quarians think they have souls.

I guess once someone finds a *soul* in any other being then they can start looking for the same in a geth. As long as no soul is found and a method to detect souls .. or define them .. exist, the more likely answer is that geth have no souls ... just as any other being in existence does not have a soul either since it is impossible to find it in them too.

Besides, a soul is a human concept and there is no reason to think that alien races have their equivalent of the same believe too. So again, no souls to be found anywhere. And do all religions have it? There are thousands of those on earth alone .. so I am not sure they could all agree on what a soul actually is supposed to be.

But the Geth .. and EDI ... are clearly sentient and that is the important thing.

Couldn't have put it better myself.

Kind of interesting that Shepherd was literally dead for 2 years and nobody asks him about the afterlife or his soul. What was it like? Was it just darkness or was there something afterward? He is the first person who ever "came back" and people don't seem to be curious about it.

(I understand why a game wouldn't want to open that can of worms..just noting how weird it would be in universe)

Do we have souls? That's a religious question more than a science or life question. The questions of true sapience is more interesting / accurate to the problem the quarians / geth face and in the end of Priority: Rannoch the answer appears to be yes.
