I'd suggest saving before doing the IFF, then see what happens after Tali's mission. If it goes into the abduction, load that save and do her mission first. That way, you can see the interesting conversations and can stop, reverse, and continue without having to sacrifice your crew.
You only have to sacrifice your crew.
You will have everyone loyal and every crew member surviving.
Aside, If you do all loyalty prior to IFF mission and give Legion to Cerberus the ambush will happen immediately. And yes Kelly is first on the chopping block, if you do four or more missions after ambush you lose them all I believe.
That's definitely an option if you're rather Renegade-ish (or 100% Renegade, in fact). I'd rather not in my "canon run" though, lol.
That's good know, wasn't aware of that o.O
(Not that I would abandon Legion, though... However I knew that it is possible for Jack to get handed over to Cerberus and appear as an enemy in 3 as a consequence. Not too sure how you'd do that, but yea)
Everyone but Chakwas. I'm pretty sure she lives no matter what.
All but Dr Chakwas. She survives to be rescued no matter how long you take, the only way to kill her is to send her back to the Normandy without an escort.
ME2: The Battle Against a Race Against Time
Really, all three games actually disincentivize against acting with the urgency the narrative demands.
I actually thought it was getting particular "hilarious" in Me3, where the war is ongoing and you.... can just fly around through galaxies and search for stupid statues or whatnot (or party on the Citadel). Granted, the Reapers get onto your heels if you scan too often, but that's that.
Realistically spoken, by the time I finished ME3, there shouldn't have BEEN an earth left to save (or the Galaxy, really).
But Mass Effect doesn't really give you a feel for how much time passed during the campaign, anyway. Between the games, yes. But during one? Not so much. Sometimes crewmembers talk like "oh yea, two weeks back when we were on Horizon", but to me it almost feels like you're doing whatever you're doing within three days or so lol.
Other than that, what Canadian Ninja said.
It's a problem with many RPGs. Exploration vs urgency. I think ME2 does it ok, because you are prepping to do a thing while your enemies do their thing with who knows how many unnamed colonies anyway. It's much more awkward in ME1 and especially 3.
That being said - I wouldn't want to play these games with a "Game Over" countdown. ^^
A lot of of the side missions like Grissom Academy, and the Tuchanka ones involving the Turians, automatically expire if left to long.
