Why can't you upgrade your system? Money?
Windows 10 only, time to move on from an OS that is no longer supported

It probably will work considering the original Mass Effect Trilogy was out even before Windows 8 came out, but as Windows 7 are no longer supported, if you run into problems, no one would be able to help you!
Win 10 is still a free upgrade, there is no excuse not to upgrade other than stubbornness :claugh:

To get close to an answer to your question, MELE is a dx11 game, so technically it should run, but I doubt you can find many people, who has actually tested the game on win7 and completed it to make sure you won't incounter game breaking bugs later.

So maybe you should buy it, see if it launches - keep it if it does, return it if it doesn't. Steam has a nice return policy; if you tick below 2 hours, you can return it i believe.
There have been multiple reports of the game not running in win7 or 8. Only Win10 is supported officially either way.

No, its not. At least not in my country anymore, it was free upgrade just when it launched.

I upgraded a win 8 PC about a month ago through MS upgrade program - free. I doubt there are local rules, but of cause it requires a ligit and activated base OS.

Get it here https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/software-download/windows10ISO?ranMID=24542&ranEAID=0JlRymcP1YU&ranSiteID=0JlRymcP1YU-rSOyFgDK8vBEUNZsZojcQA&epi=0JlRymcP1YU-rSOyFgDK8vBEUNZsZojcQA&irgwc=1&OCID=AID2000142_aff_7593_1243925&tduid=%28ir__f9gawuwdhskfqwjlkk0sohz31m2xuliwbcq20iti00%29%287593%29%281243925%29%280JlRymcP1YU-rSOyFgDK8vBEUNZsZojcQA%29%28%29&irclickid=_f9gawuwdhskfqwjlkk0sohz31m2xuliwbcq20iti00

Use the download tool.

Edit:
1. Go to the Download Windows 10 website. (Above url)

2. Under Create Windows 10 installation media, click Download tool now and Run.

3. Choose Upgrade this PC now, assuming this is the only PC you're upgrading. (If you're upgrading a different machine, choose Create installation media for another PC, and save the installation files.)

On the link you just gave me:

"Here’s when to use these instructions:

You have a license to install Windows 10 and are upgrading this PC from Windows 7 or Windows 8.1."

Says I need a windows 10 license.

It actually says that you HAVE a license?

As said, I did an upgrade on a friend's PC about a month ago without problems 👍

Don't be ridiculous - only a bare minimum of new games require Windows 10 as an obligatory system, and even in these cases, they are blocked from running artificially.

Is there a good reason why I can beat Cyberpunk 2077 on Win 7 without issues, but have to upgrade to Win 10 for a remake of a game that originally ran on Windows XP? How exactly did they mess up MELE for this to happen?

It's pretty easy actually. The thing you have to remember is, that if they put win7 as minimum requirements, they actually have to actively support that. They then are required to make sure the games will run on that system. However, in the case they discover something in the process that would need fixing in Win7, they can't phone up Microsoft anymore, as Microsoft doesn't support it anymore.
Now for some Companies that's a risk they are willing to take, as it is a very small risk of actually happening. Other companies however are more conservative, and thus they will limit their products to only depend on software that will be supported by their creator for the forseeable future.

Win7 is DX11 compatible. DX12, not so much.
