Should the notes/blueprints have captions?

The pictures on the notes/blueprints are impossible to work out, yet I've just read that you need to build and use at least of the contraptions to enter the final part of the game. It's the last thing in the world I would have thought of doing, I just presumed they are convoluted traps. Even the smallest clue as to what they are would be handy.

Well, I've got some blueprints, but because I have no idea what each does I'm hoping that I've had some luck and do have the one I need!
(without searching on the internet I would have literally no idea how to open that door - it's a really weak point of the game)

There should have been a blueprint you picked up right infront of the locked door. Use that one.

If you want a hint of which one it is, I can oblige.
