You can always copy your savegame over in multiplayer folder later if you want to invite a friend in your world.
And yeh, you need to start a host and be online for someone else to join your game.
Solo pauses when infentory is open, as well as with the esc menu. Mulitplayer never pauses, not on escape, not on alt tab, not in inventory ... it can be a lot harder.

A good example - I built near a cave in multiplayer and there are times when I want to craft several things that I go into the cave so I have 15 minutes with no enemies near by so I can craft. If I try to do it out in the wilds away from my base I will often be perswasively detered from my activity by a rock to the back of the head.
Starting the game solo can be better and more relaxing, since you can take yourself all the time you need to figure everything out, without having teammates that are in a rush.
On the other side, playing with others can be easier, and together with good friends, also more enjoyable.
So if you've got some mates you already know, that have the same playstyle like you and also don't know the game yet, play with them.
If you have to rely on randoms, its better if you start solo.
No. wrong.
Long story short is both have advantages and disadvantages, and it's up to OP which he prefers.
It's more fun to watch a friend get obliterated, running around, etc. in multiplayer. That's the only thing that really brings any semblance of excitement and fun to this game. Everything else is droll and dull.
1. Can sometimes get unwanted spoilers through talking or discovering things you haven't yet discovered.
2. The game is not as scary nor challenging with multiple people.
3. Its easier to go at your own pace in solo. Whereas in coop you have to agree on doing certain things in certain places.
