I'm unsure how digging would work in a world crafted this way. Games like minecraft just use layers and you go down a square, but everything is flat top blocks. Not opposed, just not sure how they'd implement. In the meantime, I do try to lay out my flooring framework first to ensure I can get the size I'm looking for before I start throwing walls out. I usually start at the highest point in the area I'm building as they can navigate drops, but can't navigate upward slopes. Its not great, but it helps me not have to re-design something after being half way into the build.
However this leaves room to build stone flat foundations!
