If the devs give us a dedicated server tool through steam i'll likely host a social experiment server at some point.
Even then the truth of the matter is the game breaks as much as it patches after each update. So as you don't even don't own it, stay off the purchase of this game for a while longer until it's complete.
Have you seen the posts in the past 2 days? Last patch apparently has people doing CTD'ing and stuttering ugh
Wherever you can play with others you'll also have to deal with the the scum of gamers like trolls, cheaters or griefers.
Why should SOTF be different?
So if you host a game, make sure to make a backup of your savegame first.
If you're the one joining other sessions you're either going to get kicked or - if you're lucky- you may find some good people to play with.
Also keep your steam friend list clean.
Don't accept people you don't know.
This decreases the chance of running into idiots when playing SOTF in coop mode.
It sounds like if you like doing the "assist"type work, such as chopping trees to help someone else build, you'd be best suited to find someone who likes to do building. In our MP game, I liked the building, so I kinda am designated builder and the other 2 guys usually gather logs and then once the framework/roof is ready, they'll start filling in walls and adding furniture too, tying in ziplines, etc.
Depending on what type of other games your friends ARE into, you may be able to tailor a game to be more appealing. You can opt to build minimal/explore a lot. Or spend hours on hours just building a huge base. Game settings will help tailor that some, but it is incomplete and does have a TON of things that should likely be added (discussion board full of those topics) and stability is inconsistent. Not to steer you away, but be aware what you're getting into. I've got I think around 153 hrs in, but I enjoyed seeing the game develop with the first one in its last 3 years of Early Access. That's not a process for everyone.
I'd maybe try joining some other public sessions and see if the people on there are cool/respectful over hosting at first. Maviba's right about it being coin toss of what you'll get, but you have less headache dropping from someone else's server vs managing your own.
