Demons on surface again

Haven't finished story on my save and for the first time i had about 5 demons wandering the treeline of my base. i remember a last patch said it was a bug but is it a feature now? scaring me because with the lack of damage we can do saves with 100+ days are getting impossible to deal with.

thanks for suggestions mateys. was just confused because im on day 100 so im fine with demons spawning but if they just spawn on the surface now its unfair for players who don't have the cross yet

the cross is a fairly early game item, I think it spawns at the beginning of the rope gun cave
