Is it easier to find? or make? after the update. Or do I have to go through caves to gather equipment to go into another cave?

After playing 200 hours finding the Shovel is fine for me. Just memorize locations and plan the best route to hit all the spots with the Pot, Scuba gear, Axes, Pickaxe, and Shovel..

It is a weak point, legitimate complaint, imo. So much energy to get, then a short time later, not heeded.

Thanks all. I agree that this seems a bit onerous for the reward. Shovels are a common tool and you should be able to construct one with a stick, duct tape and metal (like a frying pan).
On the other side of this, unless you do research, I don't believe the game tells you how either.

You know, if you read all notes you found, there is all tools locations for you. I know i'm lazy too, but i read those notes in youtube videos)

ok. I will look far more closely. Just an update. Went for the rebreather. Took a bit but the NOOB move was to re-surface in the ocean at night. What an idiot. Took a second then I saw a blue pixel moving back and forth across the screen in one of the directions. Saved by Kelvin walking back and forth on the beach.

This is a special shovel, a rare 'Binford 3000 with the kung fu grip' shovel. Needed to progress the game :)
