For your materials, work, and time messing around with walls, just make traps. Then more traps. A variety of them. And not in ugly perfect lines or squares of them either. Be a bit random-looking and artful about it in order to address the practicalities. You'll be very surprised and relieved by how effective they are.
Forget walls. Of any kind. Maybe a low stone fence or stick fence literally just for 'looks'. But forget walls.
They're not a waste of time at all. Walls are great for channelizing enemies into certain areas and you can then concentrate your traps in those spots.
They know it all though, don't you know? /s
