if i'm building a 5x5 i do the outer logs only (no logs in between) and put on the first pass of spikes then the second pass of spikes. when the bottom is done i put the 1/4 logs on then the upper logs. put your stick in the ground to start and use the dotted line with the circle to place your stick on the upper log, a lot of times the first stick will go through the upper log into the lower one (i think cause you doing it from the ground), jump up on the log to place another stick from that one but the dotted line will be below the upper log, try lining it up and place it, this one should be on the top log. remove the first stick and use the one that's on the top to continue. If your not getting the dotted line try another spot. i can usually make it work but it can be frustrating.
this is very hard to explain, sometimes it just doesn't work for any reason that i can see. I had to isolate the logs i want to spike from things i built close by or disconnect other logs to make it work. It's trial and error , the more you play with it, the more you'll learn i guess, it's quirky for sure. not sure if any of this can help you but it does still work. these screenshots are from games i started recently.

Thank you. I pretty much did it like this, only I couldn´t place a log on the ground but needed 1/4 log props, because of the slope. I´ll try it again on easier ground and see if that works better.
