I also don't know if the heat from the fireplace has an effect on the drying of meats, nor if my 2 small windows play a role in the drying... (???)
So, for the fans, I tried them, I had put 3 of them 1 or 2 m from the dryers (2 dryers at the time, fans filled with full armor), it was mainly meats, because I am not very close to a river (I nevertheless have a fishing hut not far from my main base where I put dryers for fish), but in any case concerning meats (not fish, I didn't know that it only worked for fish...!?), the fans did not discourage at all the eagles located in the vicinity of my base...
Also - if you place the racks in shallow water then birds don't steal your food. Not sure if it slows the drying process but even if it's slower at least it's still there come winter.
I´ll also check if Virginia ever ate any of my meat. I don´t think so. My dryers are all build in shallow water.
You cannot give any orders to these two characters regarding this subject. The only one who can be given some "basic" orders is Kelvin, but that doesn't concern food.
As for Virginia, she does what she wants, we have no control over her, she eats mostly meat, raw or dried, it's true that I've seen her eat/remove fish from my dryers less often, maybe never !
Locking the doors is useless, my door (the only access) is locked all the time but that doesn't stop them from coming in, Kelvin likes to lounge around next to the fireplace to warm up and Virginia comes in to eat my meat, lie on my bed, sit on a chair or on the floor...etc.
The lock is not used than for the cannibalistic natives.
He does eat meat but he can eat a few times before the meat is gone. Virginia does the same with limbs, eventually they disappear.
Food is too easy to get in this game for this to be an issue imo, Virginia also brings in a lot of meat, squirrels and rabbits. I have not seen her eat fish so keep one rack with fish on it and you're good to go.
