Is there a point to building a base?
I want to love this game but I think I'm missing something in regards to building. Building any kind of base feels completely optional and causes more problems than it solves. The game is much easier if you just wander around from POI to POI using whatever you have in your inventory.

I feel like there should be some reward to building a base. Somehow the game should be easier if you put in the hard work.

What do you guys think?

sadly not its purely for the fun of it but at least they gave us the option for it
Basically that is the problem, bases are a huge time and resource sink without offering the player anything in return that can't be more easily gained exploring. So it makes base building more negative than positive.

After a long day you need the safety of a base. When its getting dark a base is like some godly beacon in the night. Place the base over a printer bunker and have everything you need. Close to the shovel cave is the middle of everything in the game. Dont want a base just build a safety tower.

1.0 makes it so you have a chance of being interrupted while sleeping if you don't sleep in a well protected base. There is a good reason to build there. And some of the raids you can get interrupted by are quite tough.

i want to say YES, there is a point to our base.
I havent reached that point yet, but you can build a certain 'machine' at your base, that can upgrade your weapons into gold weapons.
There is also a machine to make armor Gold i believe.
Ive watched someone with all gold gear and it looked like a blast.
That to me, is worth building a base. bring on those unbalanced hordes when your gear is all gold. ( gold katana etc, gold shotgun, gold pistol etc etc )

There's nothing more redundant than building a base on top of a more secure base.

1. Protection from being surprised while sleeping.
2. Place to have rain catchers for water, shelves for extra things to be stored, farming planters, meat racks, extra pots filled on shelves.
3. Safe place for crafting.
4. Bone making industry - cannibals always attack, kill with traps, put bodies on fire, harvest bones; have tons of bone armor.
5. Just for fun and to see your progress from a simple hunter's lean-to, to a base filled with trophies/etc.

gotta be honest I just dipped back in to see how it is and it kinda feels this way so far. I had it in mind to see how passive the cannibals actually can be and so far I haven't even been attacked, even when stopping at the edge of their camps. I just give em a little friendly squat and move on. I'll be curious to see if I get interrupted sleeping in tents or tarps at some point but so far I mostly save then move on, eat energy bars, sleep if I must, then continue. Has been honestly really comfy lol

My game the ferals started fine but the cannibals started out just plain nasty and attacked instantly.

Solafit crafting

...or try to fight (run away from) 3 legsy, a cat-dog, that one that is as big as a house, some spitter and twins with a pointy stick.

I take my comfy and well protected base that fights them for me over the former anytime. :)

And building a safe base is just fun for me. One reason I bought the game in the first place.

Ps.: Tried to camp with a tarp in the forest after the patch. Got raided 3 times. Cannibals, more meaner cannibals and in the end a mob of mutants. At the third I reloaded. Day 150+ btw.

Update- Got raided by 3 cannibals after I slept in a tent(by the kukri) and I'd printed the red mask earlier. I just chilled with em and put the mask up. One dude circled me to make sure I'm chill and then they just left =P
*keep in mind I have not attacked them AT ALL, and keep weapons stowed when they are around.

That's pretty cool. What day were you on?

I gave up base building cause my game crashes ever 30 to 60 minutes.

Of course, you can complete the main story without building anything other than campfires and tarp tents.
But having a few small cabins around the map + some basic storage structures doesn't take that much time and makes the game easier.
But in terms of completing the main story, building gigantic palaces with sophisticated defenses is not a time investment that pays off.
