caves are still kind of a letdown
I was expecting the caves to get more interesting with the release of the 1.0 update but they are still are very disappointing just long linear hallways with some guys to beat up on and that's it. I really enjoyed getting lost and exploring the first games interconnected caves system and i understand that some people found it annoying so it couldn't come back OK fine. but man the caves just suck now and have persistently sucked the whole time in sotf. there are so many missed opportunities here for example the zipline cave, seriously you get it and thats it... why not make a puzzle where you have to actually use the zipline to explore the cave? if the devs aren't going to make exploring the caves a adventure can they at least make exploring the caves a puzzle or at least make them more complex and require more than just "walk forward and hit a thing"? why not make the caves require some tools to continue only found in certain caves like how the first game was.

I dont know I have a feeling this game is going to be like the first where it just gets progressively updated over a long time I just wish there was some sort of roadmap or plan or something I am kind of tired of getting on and the game still feels like its missing its charm. i know that name of the game is the forest but the caves need some love too.

The caves in the Forest were one of the best aspects the game had. It almost seems like the creators themselves didn't know why their first game was successful. Otherwise, I can't imagine a decision that would lead to changing the most enjoyable game mechanics.

I know it's probably not going to happen anymore, but I still kind of hope that another big patch will come and the caves will really be worth it, and the mountains in the middle of the map will get the true potential, like the crater in the first game.

That fking mountain takes up half the map and has nothing on it and is just an annoying barrier to the other side of the map

this would honestly be so much better. I kind of wish that the mountain spiritually replaced the pit from the last game as well. that would help so much with pacing which is another issue sotf has issues with.

No they're not. Players just built expectations for the sequel game that were based on exaggerated memories of the first game. Many of the complaints I see seem to be like this. I agree with a few critiques, in some ways it is disappointing and the first Forest was better (or at least SEEMS better), but most of what I've seen are from not noticing how good SOTF really is and needing it to be 10 times better in order to just be equal to the first Forest.

this is why bad games get made. people blame the fans instead of the product.

yeah, what idiots we all were, expecting something similar to the first game. there are zero caves in Sons that begin to even approach the structural complexity of even the simplest cave from the original game.

so you always expect sequels to get worse? this is just such a bizarre stance to take, I'm pretty sure you just copy/pasted this and don't actually believe it.

I'm finding the blind cave enemies awkwardly hard. They are no longer blind it seems and take waaay too many hits with the modern axe to take down. 2 - 3 head shots with the pistol, come on!. I seriously can't get to the rope gun on normal as easily as I did a year ago.

Can't disagree. All the caves feel too linear and a lot of potential was wasted. Walk from A and clear the path to B and exit. No real obstacles to avoid or get past, no puzzles as you mentioned (which would have been a great idea) and have little to no artistic appeal anymore like the ones from The Forest. SOTF's caves feel bland. They do not have the same artistic appeal. I remember going through The Forest caves and always stopping to admire the art. There was always something interesting to look at or inspect. The ceilings of the caves, the water below, all the vibrant reflections, the glow worms hanging from the cave ceilings, the creative use of gore art, etc. I'm not saying SOTF's cave art should be the same, but in all seriousness, they're extremely lackluster in the art department.

The constant sound of ambient wind too just makes it all feel like a wind tunnel with some corridors to poke around. Yeah, the jump scares get a person off guard sometimes as we get used to this wind sound in every single cave, but otherwise, Endnight seems to play too heavily on the jump scare approach. After a cave or two, the jump scares just don't work anymore and thus, the caves feel even more bland than they do.
