How do you get clean water?

I remember in EA you could drink from rivers, and technically you should still be able to do this at the source of a river on a relatively untouched (at least the forest area) island.

I assummed you need the cooking pot to boil the water first (which i have), but no matter how long i keep it boiling on a fire it still says "dirty water".

Cooking pots are found in abandoned camps and cannibal camps, and there's even one in the residential bunker. Fill the pot with water from a lake or stream, then place it on the fire; click the gear to close the lid and start the boiling process. After a couple minutes, the lid will pop and the water will be clean.

Alternatively, collect sea turtle shells and build rain catchers. Unfortunately, they freeze in the winter. Rain catchers are also the only way I know to fill a 3-D printed canteen.

When placing the cooking pot on the fire, do you click the gearwheel icon to initiate boiling the water? The pot lid should close and start bouncing.

Otherwise, another option is to make the rain catcher and wait for rain

no never seen it.

I mean when you put the pot on the fire it's already boiling.

Mouse over the gear icon, and you'll see all the recipes available. Then you click to start cooking. The lid closes when cooking begins and opens when it's finished.

If the pot only has water in it, you can only make the first recipe, clean water.

I agree this is like the most confusing part of the game.
