when i put dirty water on a fire, it just keeps boiling. How do I put a lid on it?

Hover over the cog wheel when you place the dirty water on the fire. You will get a bunch of options, clean water is the top option.

It's a bit different than how it worked in the previous game, so this threw me off a little at first too. You need to click on the gear icon next to the pot. If you mouse over it, you'll see it lists various recipes you can make in the pot. The "clean water" one is the default recipe if water is all you have in there. If you can't click on the gear and it appears white/grey, you might want to make sure you haven't put in any other ingredients, as it won't let you start the cooking process if what you've put in doesn't correspond to any particular recipe.
