Another Building Question For the Experts - Half Plank 'railing' attached to pillars

I want to make a bar inside my house. I like the look of the half planks atop 2 half pillars as it allows me to place shelves on for placing drinks. Without the shelves added it looks like this:

The only problem is, I cannot find a suitable method for placing half pillars on top of the half plank either side, thus connecting it to the rest of my build.

After a lot of experimenting, I placed a random half pillar which did some really strange stuff to my roof (which took ages to fix) however, it placed the half pillar exactly where I wanted it, like this:

However, due to the strange, clearly glitched way it was placed, I could not connect the half pillar anywhere else, so clearly that wasn't the right way to go.

Would greatly appreciate any advice. Hope I explained it clear enough. Usually my explanations are as clear as mud XD

What shelves do you want to add? In the pic there is a half plank atop two half logs. Isn't that what you want? Explain this a little clearer, I don't understand what you want yet and what the problem is.

Sorry adding the shelves isn't the problem. I'm trying to add half logs on top, each side. In the second picture it shows what I am trying to achieve, but I don't know how I did it, and regardless I think I bugged it because I cannot attach anything to it.

Basically the game does not ordinarily allow you to place vertical logs, on top of half planks. The second pictures shows me having done it, but I don't know how to replicate it, and that doesn't matter anyway because the log atop, is bugged (wont connect to anything else)

Try it when there is a horizontal log intersection above it. Let me know if you want a crude drawing to illustrate. I just tried it and it worked.

I don't know if this happens to you but I noticed when I tried it 2 things happened.
1. the half log never placed the first time, it just gets dropped near by.
2. If you remove the half log, you cannot place it back. You have to replace the horizontal log above

The building in this game is wild haha
