Need a clear comparison to The Forest
Hi all,

Interested in SofT, after recently discovering and playing The Forest. However, I see lots of seemingly conflicting information about the content of Sons, compared to the original

Can someone please just break things down a bit? What exactly are the differences in features, content, the PvE challenge and so on?

Thanks

The list is long and exhausting. Watch videos or play it.

Is that in favour of The Forest? So SotF is quite a big step back?

Personally, I still prefer the forest. Something was lost in the translation over to the new title. But both are enjoyable games and they don't cost much at all.

Certainly worth the price. But it's better for you to come to your own conclusions rather then have someone else decide for you.

To me its the same game and another cash grab imo. If you have the forest is all you need. Either that or Rust.

Here is some of the most noticeable changes:

1. Updates graphics with better physics, more realistic lighting and many other good things
2. New building system. When building most structures there is animations associated with each item placed. Allows for a lot more customized options.
3. New story and locations.
4. This game has a lot more high tech gadgets in it like laser sight weapons, gps devices, solar panels, can build electric fences and there is night vision goggles.
5. Numerous new mutants and cannibals including puffies, fingers, slinkies, twins.
6. This game has companions. Virginia and Kelvin help you through the game. Kelvin can be ordered to do stuff. Virginia Puffton can attack enemies for you.
7. Some argue this game is less scary due to the presence of a gps, powerful guns and numerous ways to light up caves. However I'd argue that the first two hard caves you encounter in this game are scarier then the first two in the first(If you have not played the forest first).
8. The map is much larger then the first. I'd say its like 3 times the size of the map in he first game. Maybe even 4 or 5 times.
9. Structures can be undone and you get back all the materials.
10. Cannibals spawn near the player vs on predetermined paths.
11. This game has vehicles. The Knight V and Golf cart.
12. There are seasons in this game.
13. Sleep is needed to replenish energy unless you are chugging lots of caffeinated items. There is also a comfort stat that determines how much energy you get back from sleep.
14. Fireplaces are functional in this game.
15. Currently there is no mini music player you can carry around to play music.
16. You can't build docks over the sea like you could in the first game without glitches or mods. You also can't clip stairs into cliffs.
17. No rafts are in this game.
18. Armsy's and Virginia's don't spawn till you choose to stay on the island and are very rare even then.
19. In my opinion the final cave and boss is lackluster compare to the first.
20. Multiplayer has dedicated server functionality.
21. You can have unlimited save files(much as your computer can handle)
22. Difficulty can be customized at the start of a playthrough.

There are many other changes, but these are some of the most noticable and big changes between the first.

It's essentially The Forest, but bigger. The map itself is 4 times the size of the map from the first game. There are way more items to collect or use to craft, the caves are bigger and the cannibals have better AI.

Some say Sons of the Forest is just too big and too empty compared to The Forest and I tend to agree with that. The map could have been smaller and that might be why some people feel like there is something missing compared to The Forest.

I prefer the sequel. The Forest is a bit more scary and it has a better storyline. But for everything else I prefer the sequel. Here are some reasons I prefer the sequel:

Better graphics, more immersive.
Better building system which is more fun to use.
Bigger map, with vehicles.
Underground areas look better and are a bit more varied.
NPCs can help with collecting resources and combat.
New, different stuff to build, like electric fences and crazy traps.

One thing to note. The storyline might improve greatly yet. Since they apparently hired someone to voice timmy. I bet we may get some of the most drastic changes to the game come full release.

True. I was definitely intrigued when they announced that. I'm hoping it mainly just affects the late game/ending because to me, that felt like the weakest part of the game.

Just buy the game and find out for yourself. :) You can then make a good judgement call if you see how it works first-hand.

IMHO, The Forest was much better. For me, it was the story-line that captivated me in the first game. In the opening scenes of The Forest, you got what the story line was -- to find Timmy. In SOTF, there was no story line right away. It kind of came together as you started exploring, and even then, nothing made any sense. It is as if the devs had no story line to begin with but they added stuff as the game progressed. Even as I finished the story line, I was rather confused how I even got to that point.

Yes, but don't forget that they are likely gonna be improving the story drastically. They hired a voice actor for Timmy. So the OP should be aware that the story will likely drastically improve on release.

This was Said so many Times about so many Things Here.
I only believe These "drastically improvements" when i See them.
Like, hirong one voice actor dosn't promised anything.
They hired a Lot of people to outsourcen Work. And you could think they used this to improve other stuff ...
Thats true. I am hopeful, but it for all we know the changes might be lackluster.

For me, it is too little too late. You know what they say about first impressions. The devs could throw billions of dollars at voice actors and it still wont fix the game. Sadly, this game was a train wreck before the train even left the station. I had high hopes for this game, especially after the thrilling and exciting experience in The Forest.
