This was the first thing I tried to do to. That and stone windows. It's a great start now hopefully it gets expanded on more.
In my case I built a stone "fundation" for a bridge while the lake was frozen and filled the fundation with wood planks so I can walk over to the other side of the lake. Worked.

Yes you'd have to rebuild the entire structure with knowledge of the new mechanics. It's a shame but not impossible. Gives you a reason to keep building, no?
