i say it's fine without auto save. as save states every 2 seconds already is a waste of resources.
to make auto save work in games it requires pausing the game sate, writing the state, playing the state every time. hot saves are even worse because of how you need a dynamic variable for every variable that you wana save.
the sleep save is actually a very old school work around for low computer power and a good idea of how to cover the pause with a story related thing like a character needing to sleep.
just pressing the save button is too mechanical for this type of game. it's a reminder that it's a game. and immersion is important in a non super in your fact action game.
games like doom need those kinds of saves to remind folks that it's justa' game bruh
So what do you think should trigger auto saves?
Definitely should be automatic autosave on sleep and custom time that could be set like every 1 or 2 or 3 ingame hours (depends what the player chooses) on Long day setting. Should be also scaled for the other day time settings. Depends how often want's the player to save. Also the amount of autosaves could be set e.g. max 50 saves. Then replace the older ones.
edit; the one thing i do not like about the saving in this game is all my saves look the same, a deer bed as that's what i end up using...i like the look. I've lost a few games by overwriting the wrong saves because of this coupled with maybe playing way too long and being a bit tired when logging off :)
