Mutant attacks

Do the mutants from the caves come and attack you I havent seen any outside the caves yet

Over time they will spawn outside caves. There are also some that you may encounter tied up at cannibal camps. Setting them free and running out can sometimes trigger a fight you can just enjoy. I'm unsure if the game has a trigger for when this starts happening. Possibly a certain cave explored or # of days?

i got to about day 18 before the mutants came out

Yeah I don't remember when I started seeing them on the surface but as the days progress they start showing up in increasing numbers, variety and with much more ferocity.

It's that last point I have issues with, somehow, they are far stronger outside the cave than inside. I won't hijack this topic to give feedback on that but just to say - be careful what you wish for!
