In The Forest, anytime you built any type of fire a cannibal patrol would be dispatched to investigate the location. You could use this to draw them in or you could make sure to always be covering your tracks if you were playing a more nomadic style. You could also just hide until they leave and hope they don't spot you, but once they catch wind of where you are settling, they start to bother you much more aggressively.
Thanks! I was having a hard time remembering the mechanic associated here, but I was sure when I built a bonfire on the shore, I got a LOT of attention. There was another thread about something that would cause them to attack more aggressively for a period of time. This would definitely work as a trigger for that type of play.
Would be awesome if having it on gave a huge area of lighting but increased visits from cannibals.
I did have some bugs with it in the first game because of build not holding and then you couldn't light it or destroy it. Much like if the logsled was in water. Pushing enemies into it or getting them to leap at you and miss and hit the fire was fun though :D
Yeah the problem it had in the first game was how expensive it was (7 logs + sticks and leaves if I remember correctly), it only had limited uses unlike the campfire, and couldn't be used to cook on, so it was generally regarded as just a worse campfire. I just built it because I liked the aesthetic and having a nice big fire to roast the bodies of my enemies on while farming bones and skulls was enjoyable to me.
Yes I believe what you are referring to is the 'artifact'. The item you get at the end of the main story. From what I understand it could either repel the cannibals or trigger large attacks within a radius it's placed, but to be honest in my over 150 hours in the game I never actually completed the main story so I guess that tells you where my priorities lie with the game xD
Something satisfying about the chaos of several guys running around on fire.
