I think the host save own inventory, position and world state with buildings etc. And the joiners just save their own inventory and position.
if a joiner builds something, or chops a tree, and the host hadn't saved before exiting...that tree would not be chopped and it's logs would not be there, and whatever they built would not be there.
If a joiner never saved, and the host saved every 5 minutes, everything about the joiner would be gone (except for what they'd built or trees they'd chopped, etc)
Remember that this means that if a joiner put some of their stuff on a shelf, for example, that stuff is now part of the world instead of the person, and it's up to the host to save so it will be that way later - if a joiner puts something on a shelf that they want later, if the host does not save but the joiner does save...the joiner will not have that stuff on their person and the stuff will not exist on the shelf either.
