Is the first game scarier than this?
I am a wuss of a man, my better half laughs at me for wanting a pillow when watching the Alien movies, she actually enjoys watching certain "scary" movies just to watch me fearful.

This game however hasn´t really scared me once, how can I be scared when I can´t see crap in the caves? All I know is something is hitting me, that´s not scary, that´s just a telltale sign to turn 180 and run. Maybe I am just not afraid of the dark, never found darkness to be intimidating, I find the unexpected to be intimidating.

It´s when I am relaxed and not expecting danger ... then crap happens .... that I get that jolt of fear. That doesn´t totally hold water though as the Alien movies are meant to have something scary happening around every corner, yet I still get the jibbies, can´t explain it.

This is not criticism, I don´t mind the game not having my type of "scary" stuff, I am having fun building stuff.

i think the first game might have been a bit more scary but i am not too far along in the game. In SotF the overland upright locals seem to be passive if you don't fight them. but i am having a hard time finding a place to set up a base. everywhere i go the locals are constantly walking through my base, and i do mean constantly. i only get a few minutes of peace before they come to watch me work or break a wall before walking off.

I think that yes that the first game was scarier but also if you are in caves you are supposed to use lights not just run blind and random through in the darkness through the cave just so you know
Everything is in the first game better.
Caves, Building, , AI, Atmosphere - everything.

Yes, in my opinion. The enemies are much more intimidating in the first game, and shotguns/pistols/grenades tend to make otherwise tough to beat obstacles a non-issue. The game has lost it's horror elements completely, and i play it mostly for the building and other mechanics. If i want horror/excitement, i play the first Forest game. Kind of sucks, but what can you do.

I guess it depends how good is your ability to let yourself get immersed by different kind of mediums. For me it has never been a issue. Only exception would be modern "horror" movies, which are utter ♥♥♥♥. Same goes for a lot of the "horror" games as well. Same jump scare mediocre predictable garbage. Who knows, maybe the kids these days think that's what horror is.

I was in a similar boat as you when I started playing the original Forest. The cannibals scarred the crap out of me. Then over time, I got more used to it, and other than the occasional jump scare, the original game did not scare me that much.

SOTF, is similar. The first time you go into caves, it will scare the crap out of you, but keep doing it. You figure out how to defeat the mutants then it becomes easier as far a scary goes. On the surface, the regular cannibals typically announce themselves and the devs nerfed the ground crawly muddy ones (They were very annoying and aggressive before the nerf).

I find that Virginia jump scares me more than anything else. She will come up right behind you, then when you turn around she is in your face.

If you're looking to know fear, don't look here. Go look in Dead Space instead.
The Forest was no more or less scary, just lower resolution.

You might also find Alien: Isolation to be more fitting for your terror needs.

Both of forest games are not scary.

Snow capped higher elevations... where its harder to survive. Don't know if they won't spawn in there, or if it would take longer for them to 'find you'.

'cannibals search for players' before 'finding them' and cannibals become more active ( this has been my experience). The further away from the more.... ideal places, the less likely, or the longer it might take for them to find you.

Further study needed before I can say for sure, but this has been my experience. I don't feel inclined to spend multiple ingame days building near the mountain tops yet.

I believe the devs are pushing to create different tribal groups with slightly different behaviors of each. One of these groups could very well be made to fulfill more of a savage horror-vibe.

Neither game is scary. I used the cannibals as a food source in the first one. They spawn far too often to be scary. Scary requires suspense. And suspense is broken when the game randomly spawns cannibals in all the time. You see them way too often for them to be scary. Replace their 3D models with zombies and you have the same game. IMHO this is a design flaw in both games.
