Doesn’t always work but definitely noticeable when it does.
I don’t know of a gold mask I’m new but maybe it has a similar affect to enemies with gold mask? I notice my red one onky works in villages with th big red dudes.
Another tribe has a gold-masked Leader, and the gold mask is supposed to do the same for those.
Using the wrong mask on the wrong tribe should make them immediately hostile.
I can't verify if this actually works or not, largely because I'm not really interested in leading cannibals to anything except a future as furniture.
This.
The tribes aren’t all the same. Many enemies have differences. I don’t pretend to know all the details but noting the difference can give you in advantage in hard mode.
To play devils advocate, I believe they did that for balance reasons and probably think it's too OP to have either mask permanately affixed to your face. Evreyone would just wear a mask and somewhat trivialize cannibals. In the first game the red paint would wear off with contact from water or rain so it had that as a balancer. Masks are permanate items.
I think a better way would be letting you wear the red mask properly but it can be destroyed easily and you'll need to print a new one.
The paint from the masks wears off over time (especially when it is raining/you are taking damage) and they can be destroyed due to a combination of the aforementioned things. There, fixed it. Shame that they will most likely never include what I just wrote or make the masks fall apart within 2 hits from skinny cannibals
I think we should be able to combine the masks with rope so we can just wear them. They might have made our characters have to hold the mask to...balance it? I don't know if that's their intention but I barely use the mask because it's so obstructive and it has no effect if the cannibals see you before you cover your face. And you have to hold down the button to wear it, all these factors make it more of a novelty to me. I only use it when I feel like going into their village to observe what they're up to.
