Health, Disease and sanity system??
Currently in the game if you eat a poison item like mushroom or drink Dirty water you instantly take damage making it feel like an unfinished system, Getting clean water is not really a challenge but having to take 7 sips in hard is more a task than a survival challenge in normal 2 sips till full is better.

My idea is as follows, drinking Dirty water gives you a chance to fall ill. in normal the chance of that happening is lower than in hard survival obviously. Also running water will have less of a chance to infect you than still standing water like a pond.

You would also be able to get a disease from cannibals, mutants, Rotten food, mushrooms etc.

The disease should at least have a visual effect instead of just a stat that gets changed.

Rework to the strength system. Change it to a physic type system where it will include strength, stamina (Athleticism), speed etc. This could also work with the disease system.

Different diseases or injuries could be:
  • Concussion, screen gets a dual effect. (Short term)
  • Fever, weaker making having to swing more at a tree or enemy.
  • Nausea/food sickness. could be the player struggling to eat. (Making food fill you less) I don't think an animation of the player throwing up will work as it might happen at the worst time like while being attacked.
  • Or just what The Forest had.

Also instead of taking a full shot of the pills, one pill case can be used more than once and maybe even used to crush the pills for more crafting and effects. Also berries can either eat 1 (LMB) or eat a hand full (RMB). same for the pills use less pills (LMB) use more (RMB) still not all the pills, but more than 1.

Also something like a sanity system can work in this game. The more you kill or eat people and do the not so normal human acts you will get more uncomfortable and get mentally unstable.
  • insomnia (tired making your speed and strength lower) cant sleep even if tired instead of red flashing in the UI bar it is a purple green glow showing you are tired but cant sleep.
  • Anxiety (Hearing cannibals laughing even if there is nothing).
  • Gun shaking. The pistol, rifle and so on will have more of a sway making it harder to shoot accurately. also could give the player more visual recoil.

Sound based systems could work if done right. Could open the game to have items that reduce the stress like music and so on. I think a sanity system will only work if done correctly from the start.

Just some other notes I don't want a green hell like system or anything, I just want an extension of what we have and what we had in The Forest.

I like the water ideas. Hate the rest. Being punished for killing hostiles would utterly ruin the game.

100% agree, being punished for killing enemies that actively attack you and your base is just bad design.

On a side note, you’ve got to remember that the forest was never a super in depth survival game like you’re wishing, I highly suggest you check out Green Hell because that has everything you just asked for.

Indeed. Both games are survival lite. I don't think a green hell esc system would be appropriate nor wanted.

Then what your asking for is a niche hardmode addition which I'm fine with. People can punish them selves all day on omega hard mode as long as it's not tainting the normal experince.

But any system that punishes the player for defending him self I am vehemently against. Sanity in particular.

There should be some punishment for eating cannibals. It doesn't matter how scarce they make animals, fish or food supplies when there is an unlimited amount of food throwing itself on your defenses every few minutes. Punishments just for killing is not a good design decision, it's not something we can really avoid doing.

Nausea from poisoning with a few negative effects is something that's needed. Bad food/dirty water does almost nothing currently.

I'd like to see strength reworked to increase damage and athleticism brought back to increase speed and stamina efficiency.

Infection existed in the first game but it's effects were very minor. Perhaps this could be expanded on a bit. Why can't we use cloth to craft bandages to patch up our wounds? Washing ourselves after battle to prevent infection or combine aloe and cloth to heal them.

If cannibals could be made friendly, then I might agree. But as it is now, their villages are subject to summary destruction and were doing the world a favor by doing so.

I wouldn't be against a sanity system if implemented correctly. Something that prevents us from living off of human flesh. But killing cannibals, defending ourselves as well as raiding camps is part of the game and should remain intact, imo. The game shouldn't punish you for doing what it forces you to do

It didn't really do much in the first game. You lost sanity by chopping limbs and maybe eating them? If you're sanity dropped below a threshold it would allow you to build effigies. That was it.

yeah boring really. But mental problems like insomnia and anxiety could work I think? having some visual and game-play effects, nothing where it's like if its too low you cant play the game just it makes it a little harder.

didnt first game used to have like blood infection wash em and something lower strenght?? it super minor and because of how dev wanna go with minial UI ya wont know you beeen having debuff the whole time. it really need visual effect. Tho i mah with hand shake but I wish for something new like Green hell you fighting ghost of tribal etc.
anxiety sound nice and I wish for more creepy stuff like these

The infection in the first game was so minor you could play for literal days and not know it was effecting you. It was a tiny little notation buried in the journals static effects. All you had to do was eat aleo and it went away.

What was bad was that it permanately kept reducing strength until you cured it.

Overall it was messy and I disliked it.
