I've tried everything
I have a 3060, a Ryzen 5 5600x well above the requirements.
I've tried reverifying over 10 times. I've tried swapping DSLL (actually did make it run noticeably better), I changed the windowless mode, I've tried DirectX11, I've tried a ton of other things. and STILL the game crashes. Opening up inventory tends to a trigger, but it's also mostly random. I don't know what to do except wait for more updates.

Same here! Usually with opening inventory, but still can be random, I feel like I've tried everything as well

As far as I can tell for now, we just have to wait for the performance/optimization update to come out which may be a while. I myself have a 3060 and I average around 60-80fps.(Not mentioning the massive lag spikes I'm getting and I'm sure you are getting too).

Though, It could also come down to your ram. How much do you have? I have 16gb atm and I don't feel that It's enough for this game to stably run, something like 7,500-9,500gb.
I've been trying out the whole game booster by razer, which helps clear up the needed ram.

I've had zero crashes since the game released. When was the last time any of you installed a clean windows?
Sylar Jun 11, 2023 @ 2:17am
It's very likely your GeForce driver not updating correctly. Which is a problem I had. Download and manually install the correct driver from the following source and see if that works: https://www.nvidia.com/download/index.aspx?lang=en-us

Now, if you're running a gaming Laptop, make sure you distinguish between RTX 3060 and RTX 3060 Ti based on your actual system information. Also, for a gaming Laptop, you will need to select RTX 30 Series (Notebooks) and 3060 Laptop GPU from the drop-down.

When you've installed the correct driver, and it's a mystery to me why the automatic updates sometimes fail, check to see if you still have the same problem.

If not, you're welcome. If you do, I'll try and figure it out with you until support can help you directly, as you sometimes have to wait a while.

Very unlikely that the OS is the problem as opposed to the GeForce driver not updating, or rejecting the post-download installer, due to a mismatch between Notebook and PC drivers, which I've seen happen sometimes.

I recommend first ruling that out, and opening GeForce Experience and checking if you have version 535.98 (Release date: 05/30/2023). Not sure why, but it does happen sometimes with drivers.

If that's still showing an older version, and you're running a PC (but it didn't automatically update) or a Laptop (and it confused Notebook driver with PC driver given a GPU-type mismatch), that could solve the problem.

I just came here to look about the same thing. I've got 52 hours plus in the game been playing on and off since release and now all of a sudden its crashing at random times. Last time I opened my inventory and it rebooted the whole PC. Been doing it for 2 days now. All my thousands of other games work fine. I have a AMD chip and a Radeon RX6600 Just updated driver and same thing happened. Something has happened as we are all having the same thing. I wanted to play with the stones ! A clean install of Windows is a bit excessive LOL

That's interesting.

Have you tried verifying the game files in the Steam library? Right click on "Sons of the Forest" in your Steam Library, go to "Properties" and select the "Local Files" tab, then click "Verify Integrity of Game Files."

If that doesn't work, then the game support will have to investigate the issue, as they may have had a deployment issue. But, the main reason I suggest verifying the files is because of the latest patch.

Sometimes a Steam update, for the platform, can clash with a game's patch update.

Wait, I think I may have a solution. I just read something online. If you're at all using a Mod, like Thunderstore Mod Manager, you have to delete the config files and then relaunch the game after having wiped those config files.

Please note, I'm talking about deleting the config files of the Mod Manager, not the game itself. That would have to be done from within the Mod Manager itself, as those files may be clashing with an older version of the game that was configured, and has configured your saved files such that you could now be struggling to launch post-patch.

Some players used mods to try and bring Kelvin or Virginia back to life after people in multiplayer killed them for no reason, and they accidentally saved, and had to resort to a Mod to try and restore their NPC allies and re-save.

Actually, I'm convinced that, or something similar, might be the issue by the nature of the crash you're all experiencing. Deleting those config files from within, for example, the Thunderstore Mod Manager, and then relaunching the game may help.

Let us know if that works, or if no joy.

I would recommend installing games on a dedicated Games folder, preferably on the root C:\ drive (C:\Games\Steam, C:\Games\GOG, C:\Games\Epic etc.) to rule out Windows/Defender and others blocking out file access, file/folder rights issues etc. Also setting exceptions for Malwarebytes or similar software for dedicated games folders. Of course don't do that for games that are from questionable sources. If you are a less tech-oriented individual, maybe educate yourself a bit first.

That would rule out a lot of OS issues, and make troubleshooting a LOT easier. Then of course check file integrity, run sfc/scannow, DISM, uninstall shady/excess/not essential bloatware from your PC. Maybe run CheckDisk, especially if not running a SATA SSD/M.2 PCI-e NVME drive.

Update your PC component drivers (chipset, audio, network etc.) and check if a BIOS update is available (read online for possible issues first). Check if you have all the latest DirectX libraries installed, if not use dxwebsetup (or offline) to install everything (from trusted sources only). Run DxDiag to see if there are knows issues. Delete shader cache from User\Appdata\Local\D3DSCache\. If a Unreal Engine game, check if needed UEPrerequisities are installed (usually in game folder).

If overclocking, drop down the overclock to rule out system stability issues. Are you overheating? Check temperatures while gaming (CPU/GPU/RAM/PCH). Are you running QVL list approved (tested compatibility) hardware? Running unsupported RAM speeds for example? Running XMP? Try XMP II. Don't know about AMD-related RAM configurations. Is the PSU good enough/working as intended? Some early access games push hardware in unexpected ways, because optimization pass hasn't been done yet. Peak resource spikes can easily crash otherwise "stable" systems, especially when overclocking.

When all that is done, then we can start talking about a game/hardware/driver compatibility issue or a hardware resources issue. Not before.

Sorry about the wall of text, but too many of these "issues" threads miss 99,9% of the needed information to make sense of anything..

1660 ti and year old drivers. Game runs flawlessly.

I've not touched the settings so whatever auto is.

I had the same experience with my old 1060 6GB. I did however manage to make it crash by pushing the card too hard (too high settings). But that is to be expected with a unfinished game and pushing out of the hardware capabilities. Not exactly helping by stating you have no issues though.

All of you always forgot about operation system - win 11 is causing major problems.
Rooollbacked it to win 10 and it works perfectly, where on same setup with win11 i had constant stutters.

There is not that big of a difference between the two. Personally for me it's the opposite, but i'm running hardware that is targeted towards Windows 11 and above. Also 3060 is nowhere near running the game at high/very high settings with high resolutions. The optimization just isn't there yet. So what i wan't to know is the resolution OP is trying to play the game at.

Additional thing I noticed. Just before crashing a small SOF box appeared on screen and a status bar rolled across. I could see some sort of utility in the name. Suggestions are turn off steam interface in SOF steam settings and also there is aissue with AMD where they suggest turning off graphic options in Raedon setting for SOF profile in card driver software
