Best bet is to make multiple bases and run between them until you can get defense walls around one.
Day 15. I've had probably 6 raids. I made my camp near the beach away from all of the camps. I do not understand people that say this.
I will say in my first few days it felt like I befriended the cannibals. I just followed the same rules as with Victoria and displayed the red mask when needed and avoided killing them unprovoked no matter how close they got. I had gold masks walk right up to me and grunt and walk off so there could be some kind of trick to the AI. Even now at 50+ days in I have large groups just walk past my base on their way somewhere else getting caught in my traps and everything and they ignore my base. Once you have the gold mask certain cannibals will worship you and bow down on the ground and throat sing a weird tune as well.
I built one base by the beach soldier/pistol float and it was constant cannibals, all the time.
I built another one on top of the bunker cave and there were so many cannibals I could barely build.
I have a couple other bases - one on the Duck Lake island, and another near the dead pilot- and they only get attacked by the raids that spawn specifically to attack you. Once, maybe twice per day.
I wish I knew how to predict good and bad building areas, but AFAIK you just have to try to build different places and see which ones have lots of enemies nearby.
If I have to fight, I make sure to have Virginia with at least a pistol to give assistance. Usually, killing 2 or 3 is enough to make cannibals back off. For creepy mutants, then it's more problematic and that's when I have to break out a shotgun.
