Absolutely brilliant. I had failed going through the front door about 234 times. This nailed it. Thanks!
They need to make it tough to get the good weapons, I get that. But, they should give you something good earlier to make it easier to make your way through the those caves, instead of just forcing you to sprint through like most people do. I think the crossbow would be a good early item they should allow you to find without needing tools to get it. It's a great stealthy weapon that will help you snipe mutants without drawing too much attention. You can sneak around with this weapon and methodically take everything out. I think something like this should definitely be made available early to help you progress through the caves.
My next and current save, I made sure to scavenge. You find a decent amount of ammo for the pistol, grenades, supplies to make timed explosives, and booze for molotovs on the surface. Spears are also handy for fingers because you can stab their legs and stun them, then switch to an axe and charge attack them 2-3 times. The blind mutants die in a single head shot, plenty of bombs to blow them up if they group up. Might just have to prepare yourself more.
But maybe there could be some more balancing. I saw someone say that the game seems front loaded and I can agree. Caves are packed with enemies and guard the shovel. But then you use the shovel to get to powerful weapons but most of the bunkers are vacant aside from a handful of enemies. Doesn't really make sense. There's no reason to go back into these caves with your new found weapons and tools.
This. Using the cross against regular mutants is very bad advice.
I basically ran through every cave required to get the shovel and I cannot imagine having killed the masses of enemies I was running past without any significant weaponry.

Once you stop going up hug the left side of it.. Keep jumping up and sliding to the left as you go forward and you should find the spot.
I think it might even be that bit of rock just left of the arrow that you can jump on and that's it, rest is easy.
Grenades are fantastic. Bombs are good too. The pistol is a nice emergency-situation weapon.
Also pretty easy to drown enemies, just lure them in to where it's a little too deep.
The bow is also effective, provided you use a flare or other light source. Try to get the enemy into a bottleneck situation and stagger them with repeated arrows. And skinny mutants will die with a single headshot. It's a real shame there are no fire or poison arrows though.
