and its a way to of shoot the extra lonely vibe of the first. Also you can just kill them
Yeah, might have to try killing them for a playthrough. I'll feel bad, but I guess that's what I want. More horror-themed behaviour would be cool, though.
Yeah, but the problem isn't that they exist. The problem is that their behaviour doesn't reflect the situation they're in.
Kelvin was presumably a soldier, and likely an elite ex-special forces contractor at that, given the company he worked with. The helicopter crash caused him severe head and brain trauma to the point where he is now a perpetually-smiling idiot with blown out eardrums. I find his "simpleton" demeanor to be one of the most horrifying things in the game because we know how wrecked he is and it plays on one of the biggest real-life fears we face as we age; that of losing out mind. I think the devs were brilliant in going this way instead of making him just a well-functioning clone of the protagonist.
Virginia's situation is not as clear to me as Kelvin's, but there are several clues in the story, and I think it is just as horrifying as Kelvin's. Her back story is pretty straight forward: pretty and talented daughter of rich parents who don't get along. We don't really get any info that I am aware of that tells us if she was a good or bad person, but given her demeanor in the game I am going to assume she is intended to be a good person. We find in her bunker room the ballet practice area with what looks to be a two-way mirror, and the layout of the bunker along with the placement of an impassible curtain in her parents' room could indicate that one of her parents was able to watch her through the glass. The likely implication of this would be some sort of abuse.
Virginia's current condition was obviously caused by her exposure to one of the cube's cycles, but we don't get a ton of specifics. But when we enter the cube with Timmy, we see him briefly phase into several co-existing versions of himself and he appears to be in mental agony during this. Luckily for him, it only lasts for a second and he is returned to a normal state. But it is clear that the cube physically and mentally affected him. I think that Virginia's exposure was similar but she did not completely return to normal, so she is left with her extra limbs on one side of her body. She can no longer speak and she acts weird in many ways, so her mind was mutated as well as her body. We know that the demons are harmed by the crucifix, and when you wave it at Virginia, she trembles and backs away from you. She has some sort of link to the demons.
I think the obvious thing for the devs to do would have been to have Virginia be the damsel in distress (like Ashley in Resident Evil 4) and Kelvin be a capable battle buddy. But instead they gave us two unique NPCs that each remind us constantly of the many horrors we are facing in the game.
It makes perfect sense that Virginia is comfortable on the island. According to the story, shes been there already 8 months before we arrive to rescue her and her parents. We are the newcomers to her, so of course she is going to be shy to us until she feels she can trust us. I suspect maybe there may be a little brain damage with her because she hums when she sleeps...unless she is just one super happy young lady.
As for Kelvin, I would think the devs would have given him a weapon because afterall he is a military guy...or is he? His behavior seems to indicate he might just be search & rescue. Does anyone really know? Would be interesting to find out his background a bit.
I kinda disagree there. I know the helpless female is a tired cliche, but having someone or something to protect or rescue (like Timmy from the first game) adds to the horror/stress of the atmosphere. There was a sense of urgency in finding Timmy and every gory scene or new twisted monster left you imagining what could happen to him.
It's fun to give Virginia the guns, but she becomes kinda OP. Coupled with her indifference (and even enjoyment) to the horrors on the island, there's very little urgency to leave or save either companions. They don't seem like they care whether they leave or not. They don't express any fear of the situation or desire to leave it.
When people say he has brain damage, it's not a joke. He suffered a head injury from the crash.

Well, once you feel too comforted from time to time, just check this Steam forum and you'll be cured
