Get the flashlight.

You're on an island where there's little to zero light pollution. It's going to get dark.

Especially in a cave where there's no natural light available.

Come on, man.

Yeah okay but how do you want Explore something, when your Torch brings nothing.

Go to your game setting and turn the gamma and brightness all the way up when you enter the caves. You will see much more in the caves.

There are 3 sources of light you could use in the caves. You start the game with a lighter. You can also craft a torch. You can also find a flashlight. Oh wait. You could also try lighting a fire in a cave as well (It worked in The Forest, so Im just guessing it works in Sons of the Forest too?)

I agree 100%, it's much too dark. Had a night recently where winter ended and it wasn't dark for some reason, it looked amazing. That view is wasted pretty much every other night by pitch blackness. With the moonlight set to the right brightness it would look much better. There's already a mod for this on Nexus.

"and then it gets darker again" - Can you show us a screenshot?
Nights are deliberately dark to make them look realistic, but that doesn't rule out the possibility that you may have some other problem. I just bought the game, I only have a lighter, so the nights are very dark for me too. I'd walk right past a cannibal if I were wandering around after dusk.

But i think torches should give more light, i think is better the lighter than the torch.

Craft a torch. The torch is better than the lighter

I light fires in caves, they only need 2 sticks each and are pretty effective.

I do agree too.
Almost all the nights are pitch black nights, and we can't do anything with that since the light sources are definitly inefficient.
-lighter = close to useless. Just allow to understand what is blocking us while we're trying to walk
-torchs gives around 1/3 of what it should to be useful (moreover there is too much light from the fire of the torch and in contrast not enough brightness around the player which makes it almost as difficult to see as it is with the lighter)
-flashlight = there is a graphic bug (don't know if it depends on hardware/software or if it's constant) which makes dust particles too bright and pixelised between the flashlight and where we're aiming to see, which draw the eye to the bright glitchy particles instead of the darker area where we're trying to look at.

So the night really should be overall brighter and the light sources adjusted/fixed.

IMO the darkness levels in the caves are about right to reality. However I do agree that on the surface, the lighting could be balanced. On clear nights the moon can add a certain amount of light.

Flares do a fair job too, and are abundant enough to use them in caves.

Yup wall torches are great in caves

Wow! Turns out there are more light sources to use. So far there is the lighter, torch, and flashlight, as well as building a fire, using flares and using wall torches.
