Any way to add more lives?

On Normal I have found that you only get 3 lives, is there any way to change this? maybe reset it.

do a private multiplayer server = infinite lives

I *think*, I have not tested this but it seems to work this way, if you save and reload the save it resets the deaths to two. I say two because you never are allowed three deaths, so you must have actually triggered this without knowing.
But normally, you get one freebie death where you escape and then the next one will be the game over.

Been playing solo for over 30 in-game days. Have been knonked over the head more than 3 times and still going. If I'm not mistaken, you need a good night's sleep, a meal and a beverage to fully recover so that your next knockout is not your last.
