How to get empty hands?

I have equipped my good axe on no. 2. Whenever Virginia comes she's afraid. I can't unequip my axe. No empty hands key in the key bindings found. I don't want to throw it away, so please, how can I empty my hands? Thank you!

Thank you both. I thought pressing G would throw away things and I don't want to throw away my axe (on the ground)?

It'll only throw stuff if you lack room for more, like rocks and stick. Technically you can pick up +1 more then you can store in your hands.

You can throw away only big objects like corpses , or logs.

Thank you all very much. I didn't think throwing and putting into inventory would be the same button, never had that in any game before. We all have our habits :P
