How does multiplayer work?
I joined a server and was told the host was ready to start a game, I immediately quit as my attention span in co-ops usually reaches max 1 hour. Are you bound to that server with a character? ... do you use your single player character? ...

I don´t play multiplayer much, just don´t want to join a server and ruin someone´s game.

You're not bound and don't use your single player, each server has a unique player that you use on it, i think you can have several on one server although i've not tried.

If you are doing something together you finish it, I understand that, but does the character exist like in an MMO? .... you log in and out without fear of ruining someone else´s session?

A player needs to host the game and the map and everything is saved to that map, so you can't play on a server if the host is not hosting it.
If you host the map other people can't play on that map unless you host it again and invite them again same if someone else hosts.

The only thing people can do in multiplayer servers while you're not there is mess with your ingame stuff like your structures and boxes ect. your character is removed from the game when you log out.
