I had the same problem with the muddies when I first started. I had to restart a couple of times before I figured out some tactics:
Don’t light a fire where you’re camping. Instead light it further away as a decoy. If you’re on the move, only build a fire and light it in the daytime (I find mornings to be best) and then destroy it (I don’t think there is another way to put it out). If you have to, break down your shelter (C over the sticks or tarp), run away and set up somewhere else to sleep. They don’t usually follow for too long when you’re running. If you are building a base, don’t camp where you’re building.
What skill ? Doesnt require any as you can just run around and ignore them all. Also once you get Virginia a gun she will be there most of the time to pick them off, in some cases one shotting them. I've also just cleared my first big cave and a massive version of the twins came to my base and killed the cannibal swarm and left which was pretty cool lol
