Are there more people who can't sleep in the game? get told to bring in some sticks first, that's fine when it's daylight, but this is a problem in the dark

There's 3 ways to sleep: equip a tarp, put on the ground, equip a stick and aim for the edge of the tarp to put it on the stick, on two edges. Or, get out the building book (b) long press x to switch to blueprints and build either a stick bed or a hunting shelter. There you can save and sleep. Hope that helps.

I have the tarpaulin up, but when I click on sleeping the icon, but then i get interrupted with the message to pick x the number of sticks. Strange.

You only need 1 stick with the tarp. You can use up to 4. Oddly you can place 2 tarps side by side and use 1 stick to prop up the middle. I don't see a practical use for it but it looks cool.

It's not the "pick up sticks" message that makes that Doom and Gloom, End of the World sound that wakes you up. It's the presence of hostiles in your vicinity. Find a cave or underground bunker area, build yourself a stick bed there, and sleep as much as you like, in peace - at least until they start populating these places with enemies, but that's a different matter entirely.

Personally, I like the camp near the ice cave. There are three real tents there (that we can't pack up and take for some reason), and very few enemies around pretty much all of the time.
