The 2 artifacts from the first game and now the cube artifact from Sons of the Forest.
The Cube activates every 8 cycles (however often that is supposed to be).
When activated, it will briefly create a dimensional shift and mutate everyone outside the cube, while everyone inside the cube is safe.
The guy with you in the cube is Timmy, the child from the first game, that got resurrected.
Most probably he was seeking a cure for his issues that arose after he was resurrected and the dimensional shift might have cured him.
The old guy at the end at the helicopter (and in the cutscene where he's shooting the shotgun) is Timmys father, Eric, the character from the first forest.
The underground luxury bunker was built by Puffton Industries and they either knew of the artifact, hence why they built the bunker as a front and testing ground or they stumbled upon it by accident.
The game doesn't outright tell you, though it's heavily implied. Timmy has the same scar as from the first game, Eric yells "get down son" and you can find a book written by Tim(my) LeBlanc about Parallel Universes and the Travel between them.
So, connecting these dots isn't as hard. But yeah, it might not be too obvious.
Edward Puffton is most likely the dead mutant sitting on the table in the bunker where his nametag is.
His wife's seat is empty, so no idea what happened to her.
That's not really clear.
Could be a Sahara Pharmaceutics employee, sent to secure the artifact maybe.
But there is no info about said person so far, as far as i know.
Well, you did help me understand it better, and I thank you. Although I find the first game's story better,
