Shelf and Bench requirements do not cost you anything...

If you equip 2 logs and build a shelf or bench schematic it refunds you those 2 logs and also gives you extra wood if those pieces were suppose to be cut up.

If you make a wall shelf you keep your logs and get 3 pieces of half logs back!

I guess you can have fun with this schematic building bug while you can, and litter a ton of shelf, benches, or wall shelves all over the place, could even wall in bases or whatnot.

They should add in a 'log path' though using quarter half blocks, at least it counts as pathing with a flat surface.

And here I thought if you tell Kelvin to gather logs and drop it in front of the beginning cave and wait, he'll start generating the logs off screen from afar instead of chopping down trees... I'd hear trees falling but don't actually see any trunks.
